Food and football are like religion in this town. That’s one of the reasons Sunday night’s 6th annual Lovin’ Spoonfuls Ultimate Tailgate party was a sold out hit. Lovin’ founder Ashley Stanley, Chef Ming Tsai and “Bizarre Foods” host Andrew Zimmern welcomed hundreds of gourmand do-gooders to Boston’s Black Falcon Cruise Terminal for the foodie fete, which featured a couple dozen award-winning chefs dishing out tailgate-inspired eats.
Among them, Dante De Magistris (Dante, Il Casale), Will Gilson (Puritan and Co.) Christine and Carla Pallotta (Nebo),Gabriel Frasca (Straight Wharf), Colin Lynch (Bar Mezzana), Michael Serpa (Select Oyster Bar) and Matt Jennings(Townsman).
Food and Wine and James Beard award-winning chef Jamie Bissonnette was honored with the Thomas M. Menino Award for his work with the community and dedication to service and food.
All proceeds from the event will go to support the org’s tremendous work facilitating the rescue and distribution of fresh food that would otherwise be discarded. The whopping 4.5 million pounds of food LS has rescued since 2010 is a crucial part of ending hunger in the area.
LS is also celebrating the recent launch of a satellite operation in the Metrowest area of Massachusetts.
Longtime supporter, author and TV food personality Zimmern explained that the model is perfect for replication.
“I’m a big proponent of social justice causes …I get to play on a global level and this is the only micro regional effort I support…the cause is righteous and one that I believe in most… they are building a national model that can go coast to coast. “
Zimmerman, a recovering addict who has himself been homeless and hungry, now has four shows on the Travel Chanel and is working in his first cookbook.
